This performance kit includes the Competition Cams 31-602-5 Mutha’ Thumpr hydraulic flat tappet camshaft, Enginetech performance hydraulic lifters, and a true double roller timing set. It is designed for Ford 221, 260, 289, and 302 small block engines that need a major upgrade in sound, throttle response, and mid-range torque. The 31-602-5 camshaft features 287 and 304 degrees advertised duration, 235 and 249 degrees duration at .050, .500 and .486 inches of valve lift, and a 107 degree lobe separation angle. These aggressive specifications create high valve overlap, producing the classic Mutha’ Thumpr choppy idle while improving cylinder scavenging and strong mid-range power.
With a basic operating range of about 2,200 to 6,100 RPM, this camshaft is ideal for street and street/strip builds that spend time in the mid and upper RPM range. It responds especially well when combined with higher-stall converters, steeper rear gears, a good intake manifold, carburetor or EFI tuning, and headers.
The included true double roller timing set provides more accurate cam timing and improved durability compared to factory-style timing chains. This helps keep the valve events where they belong throughout the RPM range, even as the engine sees more load and higher revs. Enginetech hydraulic lifters are matched to this flat tappet performance profile and help maintain smooth lifter operation, proper oil control, and long-term stability.
